Transforming Baby Sleep Struggles: One Mom’s Journey to Joyful, Rested Days

Like many parents, Kathryn was navigating sleepless nights and nap struggles when she asked for help

At Sleeper Teachers, we are passionate about helping families reclaim restful nights and joyful days. Today, we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn James, a third-grade teacher from Fort Collins, CO, whose journey into parenthood led her to seek our support. Like many parents, Kathryn was navigating sleepless nights and nap struggles when she reached out to Sleeper Teachers. Her story is one of perseverance, trust, and transformation, and we’re honored to have been a part of her family’s journey.

Kathryn’s Journey: The Early Struggles of New Parenthood

Kathryn, a dedicated teacher and new mom, had prepared for motherhood by diving into books on pregnancy, parenting, and sleep. However, as many of us know, no book can fully prepare you for the reality of newborn life.

In the early weeks, Kathryn’s daughter, Lottie, exclusively contact-napped and slept on her parents at night. Kathryn spent hours pinned to the couch during the day and lying statue-still at night.

As Lottie transitioned to daycare at 10 weeks, nap times were short — just 10-15 minutes — and she was overtired by pick-up time. Kathryn returned to work after 13 weeks, only to find her limited evening time with Lottie was consumed by contact naps.

They tried transitioning to crib naps around 4-5 months without much success. Nighttime brought its own challenges, with Lottie waking 2-3 times a night. When the 4-month sleep regression hit, the night wakings increased to 4-5 times. Kathryn and her husband tried a sleep program, but the result was nights spent on the floor of Lottie’s room, constantly replacing her pacifier. They considered “cry it out” methods but couldn’t bring themselves to try it.

That’s when Kathryn’s doula referred her to Sleeper Teacher Becka.

The Turning Point: Partnering with Sleeper Teachers

When Kathryn reached out to Sleeper Teachers, she was ready for help. While she was immediately on board with hiring a sleep consultant, her husband was more hesitant. Like many families, they wondered if hiring help was necessary — especially when other parents seemed to handle sleep struggles on their own.

But Kathryn saw no shame in seeking expert help — and we couldn’t agree more. Every family’s sleep journey is unique, and there’s no “one right way” to navigate it. Our role at Sleeper Teachers is to provide personalized sleep plans and compassionate support to help families get the rest they deserve.

Working with Sleeper Teachers made all the difference for Kathryn and her family. They felt comfortable sharing their insecurities, asking questions, and being honest about their struggles.

One of the first changes we recommended was removing Lottie’s pacifier to help her build sleep independence. Kathryn and her husband were understandably nervous about this step, but we talked them through the rationale and assured them it was their decision. They chose to follow our advice — and within three days, Lottie was sleeping through the night.

Tackling Nap Struggles and Daycare Transitions

Our work with Kathryn didn’t stop at nighttime sleep. We helped her navigate Lottie’s tricky nap struggles and challenging daycare transitions. Sleeper Teacher Becka was there every step of the way, offering guidance and support until everything was just where Kathryn wanted it.

Years later, Kathryn’s family is still thriving. Lottie sleeps better than any toddler they know, and the family has quality time together during the day. Playtime after work is a regular part of their routine because Lottie is well-rested from her daytime sleep.

Perhaps most importantly, Kathryn felt like a better mom. With more sleep and renewed confidence, she was healthier, happier, and more present.

Why Asking for Help Is a Strength

Kathryn’s story highlights an important truth — parenting is tough, and there’s no shame in asking for help. Whether it’s for sleep, feeding, or emotional support, seeking expert guidance can make all the difference in your family’s well-being.

Similar to the thousands of other families we have worked with, Kathryn shares, “Working with Becka was a dream. We felt totally comfortable being honest with her about our insecurities and struggles and asking questions if we didn’t understand.” Having a Sleeper Teacher in your back pocket might just be everything you need to make rested nights a reality for your family.

At Sleeper Teachers, we’re here to support families just like Kathryn’s. Whether you’re struggling with sleepless nights or just want a smoother sleep routine, we’ll create a personalized plan that works for your family.
